Monthly Book Reports
Students will complete a book report to be turned in each month. This year, you will be expected to read and do projects for six books. It is up to you to select the books and projects you will share with the class. A different project must be chosen for each book. Your books must come from different genres each month: realistic fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, biography, mystery, fairy tales, fables, myths, and fantasy.
1st Semester Project:
State Research Project
Research a state other than Virginia. Look up the state tourism office online to gather information, brochures and a map of the state. Write a research paper (5+ paragraph report). You must have a minimum of 3 varied resources of the following: 1+ books, 1 encyclopedia excerpt, 1+internet source. Draw at least two different types of hand-drawn maps (#1 physical map with capital & major cities, plus a second map showing one of the following: product/manufacturing, population density, etc.) Create a state paper quilt that displays symbols of the state.
2nd Semester Project:
Our class will be participating in the school wide Independent Project program at Ryan Academy again this year. Your child will research and write a report. They may choose any subject that interests them. We will do most of the research and all of the writing in class. They will be required to complete a tri-fold poster (to use as a visual aid during their presentation) and a creative piece for this project at home. I will send home a list of creative ideas later, but do not feel limited by this. They will present their projects in class the last week of April.
In January the children will need to turn in their subject choice for approval. Please discuss this with your child to ensure that they choose something to research that they are interested in learning about.
